25 August 1930 - Oil discovered in Algeria!
After much surveying and exploration of the Algerian desert, the Bureau de Recherches de Petroles (BRP) has discovered
a substantial oil field at Hassi Messaoud in Algeria. This remote location is almost 240 miles from the Tunisian port of
Gabes and over 300 miles from Algiers. so it is not yet determined whether it will be economically feasible to develop a
production facility there. However, further exploration there, and in other parts of the French African empire is certainly
indicated.
Hassi Messaoud is located in the center of the map at the bottom, and is outlined in white.
